About Washington

This territory was first granted in 1735 by the Massachusetts government. It was named Monadnock Number 8, one of the fort towns designated to protect the colonies from Indian attack. In 1752, the Masonian Proprietors issued a new grant to Captain Peter Prescott and others, who called it New Concord. Those settlers forfeited claim, and the territory was granted yet again in 1768 to Reuben Kidder and others, under the name of Camden. In December 1776, residents petitioned the newly established American revolutionary government for incorporation of their town as Washington, in honor of General George Washington.
